History of the group

Mestre Braga:

Mestre Braga is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and is a student of Mestre Moraes. With more than 20 years experience as a master, Mestre Braga is an excellent teacher with a profound insight in the original Capoeira Angola, as tought by the late Mestre Pastinha.

Mestre Braga formed GECAÁB in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1994. The group trains and works in Centro de Capoeira Angola Rio de Janeiro (CCARJ), a center shared by several Capoeira Angola groups located at 243 Rue Catete in the Catete area of Rio.

GECAÁB in Rio is now under the leadership of Mestre Edson, a former student of Braga.

Mestre Moraes:

Mestre Moraes is from Salvador and was a member of Mestre Pastinha's school of Capoeira Angola.

In 1970 he brought Capoeira Angola to Rio de Janeiro. Through Mestre Moraes, Pastinha's school found the possibility to be established in another city, creating the group Modaroe and the group Moraes.

In 1979, after the training of three Masters Braga, Neco and Zé Carlos, the group GCAP was born, specifically for the preservation of Capoeira Angola, to protect the knowledge and the value that originates from this art.

Mestre Pastinha:

Mestre Pastinha's school was founded in Salvador, Bahia in 1941, was the principal archive and symbol in the struggle to keep the value of Capoeira Angola from dispersing.

Mestre Pasthinha himself came to know and learn the movements of Capoeira by becoming a pupil of an African, Master Bendito.
